Iraqi Convoy Carrying Refined Fuel Enters Syria

(MENAFN) A landmark convoy of Iraqi fuel tankers crossed into Syria on Wednesday through the al-Tanf-al-Waleed border crossing, formally restoring a strategically vital transit route that had remained severed for over ten years.

The Syrian Petroleum Company confirmed that the convoy comprises 299 tankers hauling refined fuel bound for the Baniyas refinery along Syria's Mediterranean coastline, where the cargo will undergo further processing before being prepared for export.

Upon arrival, the shipments are set to be offloaded into storage facilities and subsequently transferred to the Baniyas oil terminal, where they will be loaded onto maritime tankers for onward distribution, the company detailed.

In an official statement, the Syrian Petroleum Company declared: "This step reflects Syria's renewed role as a vital regional energy transit hub and strengthens its position in the regional energy security equation."

Safwan Sheikh Ahmad, director of corporate communications at the Syrian Petroleum Company, told a state news agency that the convoy is expected to arrive at its destination later Wednesday, adding that the fuel flow will contribute to economic activity through transit revenues.

Wednesday's milestone follows the formal reopening of the Iraq-Syria border crossing just one day prior — a crossing that had been shuttered since 2015, when the Islamic State group overran vast stretches of territory straddling the Syria-Iraq frontier, effectively choking off a critical regional artery for nearly a decade.
