Trump Issues Warning Regarding Former Iraqi Premier
The Republican president conveyed his remarks in a post on the Truth Social platform on Tuesday, arguing that Iraq suffered significant setbacks during al-Maliki’s prior tenure.
Trump pointed to al-Maliki’s earlier time as prime minister, saying, “Last time Maliki was in power, the Country descended into poverty and total chaos. That should not be allowed to happen again,” and called his approaches “insane policies and ideologies.”
He also threatened to halt American assistance to Iraq should al-Maliki be selected again for the top government post.
The move comes as Iraq’s Shiite political bloc has nominated al-Maliki, who previously led the government from 2006 to 2014 and is the only prime minister to serve two terms since the 2003 US invasion, for another term once a new president is chosen. Kurdish representatives have sought to delay the vote on Tuesday, reflecting ongoing parliamentary debates.
In a related development, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has cautioned Iraqi officials against forming a government seen as aligned with Iran—a concern in Washington as Iraq navigates its post-election leadership decisions.
The US still exerts financial influence, in part because Iraq keeps its oil export funds at the Federal Reserve Bank in New York.
Al-Maliki, after decades in exile under Saddam Hussein’s rule, returned to Iraq following the 2003 US-led overthrow of the Sunni-dominated government and later took part in administration restructuring efforts that critics say intensified sectarian hostilities. His potential return continues to spark debate about Iraq’s political trajectory.
