Iraq Affirms Commitment to Regional Security
National Security Adviser Qasim al-Araji made the statement during a joint press conference in Tehran alongside Ali Larijani, the Secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council.
According to a news agency, Araji declared, "Iraq will not, in any way, permit the use of its land or airspace to threaten Iran or any neighboring country."
He also reassured that Baghdad remains fully committed to the security pact it signed with Tehran.
In August, Iraq and Iran signed a memorandum of understanding aimed at improving security coordination along their shared border.
Araji highlighted that the Iraqi government is focused on promoting regional stability and preventing any escalations or tensions that could endanger regional peace. He arrived in Tehran earlier that day for discussions on these matters.
Additionally, Araji revealed that Iraq had lodged an official complaint with the United Nations Security Council regarding an Israeli airstrike on Tehran.
This surprise attack, which took place on June 13, targeted various military, nuclear, and civilian sites, including senior military officials and nuclear scientists.
Iraq had condemned Israel’s violation of its airspace during this assault and filed the complaint in protest.
Araji also shared that Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani had reiterated Iraq's opposition to the use of its airspace for any attacks against Iran in meetings with multiple world leaders.
